Who We Are

Embodying Ancestral Wisdom Through Cultural Fusion and Resilient Spirit

Our Kalpulli  proudly defines itself as a synchronization between culture and tradition, embodying a profound understanding of the stories of our ancestors. We honor the legacy of our forebears by seamlessly blending cultural traditions with contemporary expression, creating a dynamic fusion that resonates with both past and present.

Central to our identity is the recognition of the struggles faced by our abuelos, who navigated suppression by religious forces while steadfastly upholding their traditions. Despite the challenges imposed by colonization, they ingeniously integrated their beliefs with the saints revered by the dominant religion. Behind the veil of outward conformity, they maintained a deep connection to the Mexica energy embodied by these saints, acknowledging their spiritual roots and ancestral heritage.

Through our danza, we pay homage to this resilience and ingenuity, weaving together threads of spirituality, cultural pride, and ancestral wisdom. As we move in harmony with the rhythms of our traditions, we honor the enduring spirit of our ancestors, embodying their legacy with each step and gesture. In doing so, we affirm our commitment to preserving and revitalizing our cultural heritage, ensuring that the stories of our ancestors continue to inspire and guide us in the modern world.

Our History

Nurturing Tradition and Healing in Community Through Ancestral Guidance

Kalpulli Tlaloctecuhtli, established in March 2019, emerged from the visionary leadership of Carlos Ramos, bolstered by the collaborative efforts of Diego Guaman, Oscar Ramos, Tannya Urquiza, Dulce Ruiz, and Alicia Rivera. Rooted in the ancestral traditions of the Mexica-Anahuac people, the group embarked on its journey in the confines of the Contreras family home's basement in Saint Paul.

Carlos Ramos conceived the idea of Kalpulli Tlaloctecuhtli with a dual purpose: to cultivate secure environments for youth, notably for those who identify as two spirit  or LGBTQ+, and to safeguard traditional customs. His personal encounters with the dearth of such havens spurred him to forge a community where cultural legacy and individual healing could intersect harmoniously.

Carlos Ramos, Diego Guaman, Lucia Davila, and Carlos Gutierrez emerged as stalwart proponents of Tlaloctecuhtli's mission. Carlos Ramos, as the head leader of the Kalpulli, guides us through the path of learning and enlightenment.

Diego, leveraging his proficiency in traditional medicine, assumes a pivotal role in nurturing healing practices within the collective. Lucia, entrusted with the mantle of fire keeper, skillfully orchestrates the equilibrium and seamless execution of the Kalpulli's undertakings. Meanwhile, Carlos Gutierrez, serving as the bandero or conch shell bearer, expertly harmonizes the group's energy vibrations with the resonant tones.

Undeterred in our commitment to cultivating sanctuaries for communal healing, the resounding endorsement we have garnered underscores our steadfast dedication. Through our endeavors, we endeavor not only to safeguard our cultural heritage but also to foster a climate of inclusivity and healing for every member of our community.
